Golfing in the Amazon

For those keen golfers who find it hard to say goodbye to their five iron while on vacation, fear not, two of the most popular Amazon destinations have you covered. Both Iquitos in Peru, and Manaus in Brazil have courses to offer, in surely one of the most exciting locations on Earth.

Warning: retrieving lost balls from the piranha-infested water traps is not recommended however!

This par-33, nine hole course lies around 45 minutes outside of Iquitos, and covers 24 acres (10 hectares). This particular course may suit the thrill-seeking golfer, as the water traps are filled with piranhas, caiman (reptiles very similar to crocodiles) that like to bask in the sand, and it is not unheard of to encounter snakes on the fairway.

“We are the only golf course in the world where a machete is standard issue with clubs,” says manager Bill Grimes, and he is not joking - machetes are given to all who visit.

Originally an abandoned cattle ranch, the course received its first official tee-off in 2008. While it has no clubhouse as of yet, this is currently under construction, along with a swimming pool and tennis court. It does however feature a driving range and a putting green, for those a little short on time.

The Amazon Golf Course is described as a difficult nine-hole adventure with narrow and challenging fairways. Certainly not your typical golf course, but either for keen golfers or those looking for an exciting adventure, the Amazon Golf Course is definitely worth a look.

The Amazon Golf Course offers pay and play golf, rates as follows:

The Amazonia Golf Resort by Nobile in Manaus is a 4-star hotel and golf course located 43.2km from Manaus airport. The luxury resort features a sauna, swimming pool, children's club, fitness center, spa, mini-golf, and of course a 72-par, 18-hole golf course.

Certainly a different experience from the Amazon Golf Course in Iquitos, the 115 room resort is a paradise for both golfers and non-golfers alike. While not playing golf, guests here can happily relax by the pool in the beautiful jungle surroundings, sipping caipirinhasin the scorching Amazon sun. I can testify first-hand that they pack quite a punch. You have been warned!

The rooms come with flat screen TVs, free wi-fi, plus balconies and hammocks for those wishing to relax a little. The buffet-style restaurant allows you to eat as much Amazonian cuisine as you can manage, and even has live musical entertainment in the evenings. The restaurant prides itself on its top-notch cuisine prepared by some of the best chefs in the area, and it really shows - I certainly left a few pounds heavier than when I arrived.
