Discover the mighty and mythical Amazon river! Between the gigantic size of the largest river in the world and the intimacy of smaller tributaries, you will discover the fauna, flora and people that inhabit this, one of the wildest regions in the world.
Open wide your eyes, your ears and your heart, and share this rewarding and unforgettable experience aboard the charming and traditional Selva Viva riverboat. This 3-day Amazon adventure is ideal for all nature lovers short on time.
Please note that the itinerary below is dependent on the river water level, weather conditions, wildlife behavior, and accessibility to locations, so may vary.
Day 1: Iquitos - Amazon River - Tamshiyacu Creek
Early this morning (around 8.30AM) you'll be picked up from Iquitos airport to be transferred to the M/F Selva Viva, your home and base for exploration for the next couple of nights.
After warm welcomes and introductions, we begin sailing upstream on Amazon River and enjoy the spectacular greenery of the Amazon rainforest.
Lunch on the sundeck as the boat continues to sail, with plenty of bird-spotting opportunities from the boat.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the wildlife hotspot of Tamshiyacu Creek. Here we'll head out on an excursion on the skiff for our first contact with the tropical jungle and its colorful creatures.
Dinner and night on board.
Day 2: Canaan Village - Tapira Chico - Night Excursion
Breakfast will be served on board this morning, whilst the ship continues to sail up the Amazon to the indigenous village of Canaan, located in the narrow Tahuayo tributary. Here, we will discover the daily activities of the local inhabitants and observe the rainforest canopy from the great vantage point of the hills here.
Lunch on board will be followed by the chance to try your hand at canoeing in traditional canoes, allowing us to silently get close to the banks and wildlife, and hopefully spot the Hoatzin bird (a prehistorical and somewhat smelly bird!) at the lagoon at Tapira Chico.
Tonight, after dinner, we'll embark on a night excursion on the same lagoon to spot the ferocious caimans that lurk in its waters.
Day 3: Paguana Shipwright Visit - Iquitos
Early in the morning, the boat will begin its return journey to Iquitos, but there's still time for some great excursions. First up, we will leave on the skiffs for an early birdwatching session on a narrow black water tributary. The morning is a great time to witness the birds at their most active.
We'll head back to the boat for lunch, and in the early afternoon will stop at Paguana for a fascinating visit to a traditional shipwright of Amazonian wooden boats. Lastly we'll make a small hike into the jungle to observe the nearby tamarin monkeys with a local guide.
Arrival in Iquitos around 3PM. Transfer to the airport or to your hotel.
