Sekonyer

A charming ‘klotok’ riverboat cruising the wildlife-rich Sekonyer River in Indonesian Borneo.

Overview

Measuring 59 feet in length and 10 feet in width, the KM Sekonyer is a traditional Indonesian ‘klotok’ riverboat. This charming vessel has been fully renovated and adapted into a comfortable houseboat that can accommodate up to six guests for the enjoyment of nature and wildlife river cruises. The name klotok comes from the noise that the boat makes as it chugs down the river: klok tok tok klok tok tok.

Life on board

Imagine falling asleep to the nocturnal hum of the jungle and awakening at first light to the symphony of the dawn chorus! As you watch the sunlight breaking through the early morning river mist, the only interruption will be the calls of the monkeys and the rhythmic flapping of a hornbill’s wings overhead. It’s a magical and deeply moving experience.

The Sekonyer river cruise boat has three air conditioned cabins, each with a double bed, reading lights, and an ensuite bathroom, supplied with locally made natural soaps from Permakultur and fitted with a western-style toilet. The cabin windows are protected with a fly screen and have sliding shutters for privacy. Completely open to the marvelous scenery, the upper viewing deck is furnished with comfortable rattan furniture and a dining table, where delicious Asian meals are served as the passing scenery glides by. In case of rain, the deck is equipped with waterproof roller blinds with clear inserts.

Your cruise

The Sekonyer River is located in the Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan province, which occupies the south of the mystical island of Borneo. Tanjung Puting is covered by an intricate montage of diverse lowland habitats, including tropical rainforest, peat swamp forest, and low-lying swampy terrain interspersed with blackwater lakes and blackwater rivers that flow into the Java Sea.

The best-known animals in the park are the orangutans, the bizarre looking proboscis monkey as well as seven other primate species, clouded leopards, civets, Malaysian sun bears, mouse deer, barking deer, sambar deer, the wild cattle known as banteng, and more than 230 species of birds, including hornbills, deep forest birds, and many wetland species.

The orangutans

You will have the opportunity to encounter the orangutans at the rehabilitation centers operated by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), whose aim is to care for orangutans that have been displaced from their natural habitat, orphaned, or illegally captured and held as pets. The orphans cannot be immediately returned to a natural, safe forest environment due to their young age so they will undergo the long process of rehabilitation; learning all the skills they need to be able to survive in the wild.

The ultimate goal of BOSF is to successfully reintroduce the orangutans into safe suitable habitat where they can live an independent life, breed freely and strengthen the conservation of the wild orangutan population.

A Sekonyer river cruise offers you and your partner, family, or friends to explore the extraordinary diversity of the flora and fauna of this incredible region. If you’re passionate about wildlife, you may want to consider combining this Orangutan river cruise with a Komodo Dragon cruise to Eastern Indonesia.
