Jayavarman

A French-colonial masterpiece offering immersive culinary-themed journeys and heartfelt Khmer hospitality.

Overview

Traveling the Mekong between My Tho, the entry gate to the Mekong Delta, and Siem Reap, Cambodia, the majestic 190-foot Jayavarman riverboat blends French colonial charm and art-deco accents with the romance and gastronomy of Indochina. The ship has three-and-a-half spacious decks home to 27 elegant cabins, an all-new open kitchen restaurant, and sophisticated bars and cosy lounges decorated with intricate wood carvings, Khmer bas-reliefs and Vietnamese lacquer paintings making it akin to a floating art gallery.

Your Stateroom

The double and twin-bedded accommodation comprises two Signature and 11 Deluxe staterooms on the Upper Deck (two pairs of which are interconnectable and great for families), plus 14 Superior staterooms on the Main Deck, each offering a minimum of 229sq-ft of living space with an en-suite bathroom. The floor-to-ceiling windows are an excellent source of light, while the full-size French balconies provide a delightful spot for observing the busy life of the Mekong. The two Signature Staterooms, the Bao Dai and the Jayavarman, proudly showcase their own identities for a truly sumptuous experience in the style of a grand old cruise liner.

Relaxing On Board

From the moment you step aboard, you will be made to feel at home and wherever you look, you will be reminded of the local arts and culture. Be wowed by the antique artifacts and local artwork in the rose-walled Henri Mouhot Lounge, named after the French archaeologist who discovered the Angkor temple complex. Here, dark furniture and harmonious Asian fabrics provide the perfect setting in which to relax or read a book among the Jayavarman’s Khymer treasures.

Prepare to be transported back to a bygone era in the Club 1930 Bar & Funnel Lounge with its warm classical ambiance, while you sink into a comfy cane chair or a dark-wood colonial style chaise longue. The library is well stocked with books, magazines, music, videos and games. A jacuzzi pool is located on the top sun deck, offering fabulous views of the passing delta, or you can indulge yourself with a relaxing foot massage or a romantic Asian spa treatment for two at the Apsara Beauty & Wellness Spa.

A Culinary Immersion

Its impressive Indochine Dining Hall was completely redesigned and remodeled restaurant in 2023 to incorporate an open kitchen facility which introduces a new gastronomic dimension to the overall dining experience. Various food courses are cooked live on the spot, allowing guests to look over the shoulders of our chefs and the kitchen team before savouring the freshly prepared local and international dishes, à la carte or buffet alike.

This unique setup allows guests to inquire about dishes, ingredients, cooking techniques, and more. Beyond enjoying local and regional cuisine, guests can gain insights into the art of cooking, creating a richer and more immersive culinary journey. However, the culinary adventure aboard Jayavarman doesn’t stop at the ship’s restaurant. Every day guests will have the choice between more classic and cultural excursions or engaging in captivating culinary-themed outings to discover traditional Vietnamese and Cambodian dishes such as Banh Xeo, Banh Cuon, Nomkrok, and more at local markets and farms.

Life Along The River

Itineraries feature lectures and educational workshops as well as entertainment. Learn the culinary delights of Khmer-Vietnamese cuisine at the cooking classes, watch a traditional Apsara dance performance, practice daily Tai Chi, enjoy food and drink tastings, cocktails on the sandbanks and on-board barbecues. Excursions are with English-speaking guides, who will take you on escorted bike rides and tours using private local transport.

The Lower Mekong is well off the beaten track, and the luxurious Jayavarman cruise offers you the opportunity to explore the region’s finest scenery and peaceful beauty in comfort and style complemented by exceptional service. From floating villages to secluded mountain-top monasteries, these offbeat ports of call offer a glimpse into the daily life and culture of the friendly local people.

Tan Chau - Border crossing - Phnom Penh

AM: Welcome to the fish sanctuary of Vietnam.

Welcome to the fish sanctuary of Vietnam. After our morning Tai Chi session and a delightful breakfast, we embark on an exploration of this area, renowned primarily for its aquaculture. Upon disembarking, we immerse ourselves in the vibrant town life of Tan Chau by boarding "xelois" (the Vietnamese word for rickshaws). Your personal xeloi driver leisurely navigates through a network of streets, allowing you to observe workshops, street vendors, shops, and the intriguing day-to-day activities of the locals. Our journey takes us to the local market, where we mingle with residents as they go about their morning shopping routines. Continuing on, we visit a Cao Dai temple and meet with one of the priests, who enlightens us about the unique beliefs and spirit of Cao Dai. Our final destination is a fish farm that has been operated for many years by a local family, who make their livelihood from this distinctive business. Here, we gain insight into the essential knowledge required to manage such a unique enterprise in this region.

To see what Tan Chau is famous for, we board local boats and head to a floating fish farm. You are about to get an exclusive look into the world’s largest inland aquaculture industry. Each of the floating structures has netting hanging down into the water to enclose the fish, which are raised and fed on a daily basis. The region’s specialties are tilapia and the Basa catfish, or Pangasius, which is unique to the Mekong River basin and rapidly gaining popularity on the international seafood market.

Optional Group Excursion: Culinary.

PM: Continuing our journey, we ascend the river for the remainder of the day, crossing into Cambodia and heading towards Phnom Penh. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. It's time to embrace the soothing rhythm of this river and fully immerse yourself in the "cruise mode." You can opt for a spa treatment, relax on the sun deck, or unwind on your private balcony. As we pass under the bridge, the captain always has an interesting story to share about "his" river. Additionally, our kitchen team invites you to participate in a culinary workshop where you can learn about popular Vietnamese and Cambodian dishes. The boat docks at Phnom Penh, either mid-stream or at the pier.
