Amazon Is The New Natural Wonder Of The World
| Amazon Facts
We reported back in November 2011 that the Amazon was provisionally a New Natural Wonder of the World, and now on Monday 13th August - after an unknown confirmation process - the Peruvian Amazon was officially recognized as such. To mark the occasion, a ceremony took place in Iquitos, capital of the Amazon province of Loreto.
The award was handed over by Bernard Weber, President of the New 7 Wonders foundation, which organized the competition. Peru’s President, Ollanta Humala, was in attendance, and he underlined the importance of the region and the responsibility to conserve Amazonia, which serves as the ‘lungs of the world’ as well as being incalculably rich in species of flora and fauna.
With regards to tourism, the Minister, Jose Luis Silva, expressed his hopes of seeing a 15% increase in visitors, with the necessary infrastructure already in place to receive them: 5* hotels, restaurants, jungle lodges, boat excursions and adventure tours … and of course, the jewel in the crown, Amazon River cruises!
