Expert Review: Belmond La Residence D’Angkor
| Mekong River
The magical Belmond La Residence D’Angkor property is a wonderful place to stay during your visit to the Angkor Wat Complex in Cambodia. Before boarding the Mekong river cruise, my travel group had the pleasure to stay at this Belmond property during our pre-cruise Angkor Wat excursion. Like all Belmond hotels around the world, this one did not miss out on any details. The hotel is a Khmer tropical retreat, located close to the UNESCO Angkor Wat temple complex. At the hotel, ancient Cambodian tradition meets contemporary style and guests are treated to luxurious services, delicious food, traditionally-designed suites, a salt-water pool and a relaxing spa.
Belmond La Residence D’Angkor Review
The hotel is conveniently located in Siem Reap, just moments away from the mystifying temple complexes, where you’ll spend the day, or days, touring the intricate Angkor temples. The hotel offers complementary bikes for you to explore the city when you’re not at the temples. Siem Reap offers an explosion of colour, flavour and mystical intrigue to satisfy the most intrepid traveller.
Our suite was located right beside the salt-water pool. The interiors of the suite have wooden fixtures designed in the typical Khmer style. The small details of the suite are what made it extra special. Each night, a little hand-made artisan gift is left for you on your bed. We received a beautiful hand fan to take with us to the temples. The fan came to very good use while exploring this humid and tropical region. The atmosphere of the hotel is truly otherworldly. Handwoven silks, artisan crafts and bespoke art pieces fill each and every corner of the hotel. Each suite features a personal terrace, spacious bathroom with a shower and bathtub, an inviting bedroom and comfortable lounge areas. The amenities of the bathroom use local ingredients like Jasmine, Lemongrass and Ylang Ylang for extra pampering.
Our travelers really enjoyed the food at the hotel. Breakfast is served each morning outside in a beautiful courtyard that has a lovely lotus flower-filled pond. Breakfast is buffet-style, and has options for any type of diet (vegetarian, vegan, etc…) from traditional Pan-Asian foods, to American breakfasts, there is something there for everyone. The hotel is home to two popular restaurants: The Circle and The Ember. Both restaurants feature a very special culinary flare of Asian cuisine that is sure to tempt your appetite and satisfy your hunger after a day of exploration. We were treated to a tasty 5-course meal with local house-wine. Personally, I really enjoyed the unique flavors of spices and fresh lemongrass that is used in most of the foods, as well as the delicious topical fruits used in dessert.
The Kong Kea Spa at the hotel offers guests a unique sensory experience. It embodies the principles of Cambodia’s healing arts to sooth, treat and relax you, using all natural and organic ingredients.
Overall, I highly recommend staying at the Belmond La Residence D’Angkor during your stay in Siem Reap. The experience is truly memorable and the extra pampering is much needed after a long day of exploring the incredible Angkor UNESCO complex.
