Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm And Amazon Animal Orphanage
| Wildlife & Flora
The Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and Animal Orphanage is located near Iquitos, Peru. The facility houses numerous butterfly species and also works as a rescue centre for other Amazonian animals. Three-toed sloths, monkeys, anteaters and other furry mammals can be found here. The Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm really benefits from tourism and it can easily be added to your Peru amazon tour.
Located on the Nanay River, Pilpintuwasi is a half-day trip travelers can enjoy not far from Iquitos. First, one must make one’s way to the Bellavista-Nanay area. This is a port located on the edge of the city which offers river transportation, in private or aboard a 'colectivo' (group boat) to the nearby village of Padre Cocha. For those with basic, conversational Spanish, this can be done without a guide.
From Bellavista-Nanay your wooden outboard canoe, or peke-peke - named for the sputtering sound their engines make as they slowly drive the canoes through the water - will travel approximately 20 minutes to Padre Cocha. In the wet season, the boat will navigate all the way to the farm, but in the dry season you will have to walk for 15 minutes to reach the center.
Open Tuesday to Sunday for Visitors
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
