Where is the Mekong River?

  |   Mekong River

The mighty Mekong River is one of the most impressive waterways on the planet, snaking its way through 6 different countries over the course of almost 5,000 km. Before boarding a Mekong River cruise, you may need to answer the question, where is the Mekong River? The Mekong river flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. The Mekong is considered the lifeblood of Southeast Asia, providing the region with an incredible wealth of biodiversity, which is vital to the livelihoods of the inhabitants of the rural parts of the Mekong Basin. Naturally, a river of this stature produces some stunning landscapes, from inundated rice paddies to verdant, jungle-covered banks.

So, where do you need to go to make the most of this incredible river? Well, given its size and internationality, there are plenty of places you can visit to see the Mekong River in all its glory. Or, even better, you can take a cruise along it and see a whole bunch of them in one go. Travellers should note that the most well-known places for experiencing the Mekong River are Vietnam and Cambodia.

Aqua Mekong River cruise

A Mekong river cruise is a fantastic way to see multiple points along the waterway and is the ideal transport for making the most of your trip to the Mekong Delta. Not only will you get unique vantage points of the river’s most beautiful spots, but your holiday will be significantly easier as meals and accommodation will all be provided on the boat. With less to stress about, a river cruise gives you the option to get some much needed relaxation as you float through scenery that will take your breath away and leave you speechless. If a cruise takes your fancy then you might want to have a look at some of the most popular stop off points along the river so you can start getting excited about your trip. The Aqua Mekong cruise offers a complete itinerary taking passengers to the best destinations in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Where is the Mekong River

Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the main countries people visit when they want to spend some time admiring the Mekong River. Among the numerous attractions that this nation has to offer are its floating markets. These unique water-bound commercial centres are charming and chaotic in equal measure and offer visitors the chance to witness a completely different way of life. Some of the most famous floating markets include Cai Be and Cai Rang. The weaving village of Binh Than is also situated along the river and is an excellent place to stop over for the day to get a taste for authentic riverside life.

If you are feeling particularly energetic, why not hire a bike for the day and take a ride along the banks of the river. This allows you to get up close and personal with the stunning natural scenery and gives you the freedom to stop as and when you please to take photos, do some wildlife spotting or just to simply stand there and gawp in awe at your beautiful surroundings. Along the way you will no doubt hear traditional folk songs floating through the air and see curious looking fruits that you might want to try.

After experiencing some of the more rural areas along the Vietnamese section of the Mekong River, a stop to the bustling Ho Chi Minh City is a must. Sample some of the delicious street food on offer here, visit the historically iconic Cu Chi tunnels and be sure to check out the fascinating War Remnants Museum before you hop back on your boat and head somewhere new.

Cambodia Tours

Cambodia

Crossing the border into Cambodia offers a whole new world of possibilities along the Mekong River. Here you will also be able to explore the riverbank but you will notice distinct differences between this nation and Vietnam. For starters, Cambodia still bears the visible scars of Pol Pot’s oppressive regime and for this reason the country is less developed than its neighbours. Nevertheless, there is plenty to see and marvel at as you make your way through the country.

One feature of Cambodia is its abundance of Khmer artisans that can be found in the villages and towns along the river. Stop in at one of them to catch them in action and you won’t be disappointed. You might also want to poke your head into some of the striking Buddhist temples – even if it’s just to get some respite from the heat.

Naturally, a trip to the capital is a requisite whilst in Cambodia but be prepared as Phnom Penh is very different to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. There is a noticeable lack of development here but the city itself is certainly no less interesting. Check out everything this wonderful city has to offer before heading off to explore the beautiful Tonle Sap Lake.

The Mekong River extends its reach far and wide and I could have gone on all day about places to visit in Laos, Thailand, China and Myanmar as well. However, realistically, unless you are planning on quitting your job and dedicating a year of your life to travelling along this watery road, you are not going to be able to see more than one or two countries’ worth of the river. Stick to Vietnam and Cambodia and you are guaranteed the trip of a lifetime with enough photo ops to fill your entire hard drive.
