This 11-Day / 10-night journey takes you either upstream or downstream the Irrawaddy River of Myanmar (Burma). From the 'unfinished pagoda' of Mingun, to the over 2,000 ancient pagodas of Bagan, to the historic terra-cotta potters' village of Yandabo, the Irrawaddy river, its people, and their culture continue to thrive. Aboard the Myanmar Days Cruise you will visit Kyauk Myaung, Tagaung, the Second Defile, Katha, Mingun, Mandalay, Ava (Inwa), Amarapura, Monywa, Yandabo, and Bagan.

Below is a "downstream" cruise program. The Irrawaddy Explorer operates a reverse 10-Day program "upstream" as well depending on the date of travel. All touring is done with up to 3 local, professional guides. The wireless headsets available for listening to your local guide while seeing the sites of Myanmar (Burma) by way of the Irrawaddy River. All meals are included as indicated in the program below. Daily excursions typically run from one to two hours long or as half day excursions.


The itinerary below is dependent on the river water level, weather conditions, and accessibility to locations, so touring may vary.

Day 1:  Embark Mandalay

Embark the ship at the Gawein Jetty between 10:00 to 12:00 hrs. Welcome cocktail and cast off.

Day 2:  Kyauk Myaung
(B / L / D)

After breakfast, arrive at the spectacular pottery making village of Kyauk Myaung and see the manufacturing stages of the famous 50 Gallons (200 liters) pots. Sail all day. Moor overnight midstream.

Day 3:  Tagaung

Explore by foot the ancient city of Tagaung; the shrine of Bo Bo Gyi a famous “nat” - spirit- , the archaeological area, and the fortifications. Continue cruising upstream for the rest of the day. Moor overnight midstream.

Day 4:  Second Defile
(B / L / D)

Sail upstream to view the spectacular Second defile, largest of the Irrawaddy gorges, with its magnificent cliffs reaching down the narrow channel. In the afternoon, sail downstream toward Katha.
**Important note: In case of Low Water the excursion will be done by local speed boat.

Day 5:  Katha
(B / L / D)

The enchanting colonial town of Katha is the setting for George Orwell’s book “Burmese Days“ and the place where, in the 1942, hundreds of "Irrawaddy Flotilla Company" ships were scuttled before the Japanese Military could seize them. Explore the old streets and the market by trishaw (bicycle with a sidecar) and, if time allows, an elephant logging camp located in the surrounding hardwood forest.

Day 6:  Mingun
(B / L / D)

Full day cruising downstream then stop for a walk through a historical river village. We arrive in Mingun and visit the "unfinished pagoda", the largest working bell and the “home for the ages”. After dinner, guests can enjoy a dance and drama performance by the Mandalay Arts School on the sundeck (if available).

Day 7:  Mandalay - Ava - Amarapura
(B / L / D)

After an early breakfast, visit central Mandalay: Mandalay Hill (with sweeping views of the city and temples), the nearby Kuthodaw Paya (which contains the world's largest book), gold leaf workshops, tapestry making wood carving, marble carving, and bronze casting. Lunch on board.

In the afternoon, explore Ava by horse-cart visiting the beautiful 200-year-old teak Bagaya Kyaung Monastery, the Me Nu Ok Kyaung monastery, and other sights. Then travel by sampan and coach to Amarapura, the penultimate Burmese Royal Capital (1783), visiting U-Bein Bridge and Silk factories. Moor overnight in front of the wonderful Sagaing Hill.

Day 8:  Monywa
(B / L / D)

Early morning drive by coach (approx. 2 ½ hours) to Monywa to visit the "Hpowindaung caves" where hundreds of Buddha Statues are placed inside niches decorated with wonderful mural paintings. After lunch, visit the splendid Sambuddhai Kat Kyaw pagoda with its more than 500,000 Buddha images. Drive to Myin Mu jetty (approx. 1½ hours) where we will rejoin the ship. Dinner on board.

Day 9:  Yandabo - Shwe Pyi Thar
(B / L / D)

In the morning, arrive at Yandabo, a picturesque and historic village that specializes in clay pot-making, where the peace treaty for First Anglo-Burmese war signed on Feb. 24, 1826. Go ashore for a walk stopping at pot-making workshops and visit the local school and monastery.

Continue cruising downstream with an afternoon stop at Shwe Pyi Thar for a walk through a typical river village. Moor overnight.

Day 10:  Bagan
(B / L / D)

Today our excursion takes us to one of the most incredible areas of Myanmar: Bagan. Once the center of the 'Pagan' Empire, Bagan today is a tourist, artist, and archaeological mecca. Visit a selection of the most significant pagodas and temples of the over 2,000 around Bagan.

Day 11:  Disembark Bagan

Disembark at the Aye Yar Jetty after breakfast.
