I’ve been exploring the world since I was a teenager, and first fell in love with the Amazon when I participated in the longest raft race in the world down the Amazon River itself—on a balsa wood raft built with my own fair hands! Needless to say, I didn’t win, but spending so long on this majestic and mystical waterway amid its lush, wildlife-rich riverbanks, adventures down which I had dreamt about since childhood, was so enchanting that I’ve been under its spell ever since.

The rainforests of the world are so full of energy, so vibrant and enthralling, and traveling by boat along such legendary waterways really evokes those bygone days of exploration. It’s not hard to imagine you could be rubbing shoulders with Darwin and Wallace, seeing these places for the first time and discovering species as yet unknown to science. Each journey is so unique, you could visit the same place a dozen times and still feel that thrill and awe as you head out on excursion, not knowing what you’ll encounter around the next meander in the river.

To have the chance to help like-minded travelers experience these remote and remarkable destinations is a real privilege, and to visit and promote these destinations a true joy, a passion which I share with my talented colleagues who live or have lived in the destinations we offer. If you want insider knowledge you can’t find anywhere else and desire a tailor-made trip of-a-lifetime, then you’re in the right place—and right hands—with Rainforest Cruises.

One Tip I Always Share

Try to learn some of the language before you go. It’s such a great way to make a good first impression, and the locals will really appreciate it. As part of this, learn how to ask politely if you can take a photo of people, and when you do, show that photo to them. It’s always a great icebreaker.

My Wild Refuge

The Amazon
The wildlife, the fruits, the sounds, the people—guides who've grown up there and can spot a sloth from 100 yards and mimic the calls of myriad species, I mean, WOW! What a place. From fishing for piranha, to swinging Tarzan-style using vines, and sleeping in hammocks with the echoes or howler monkeys ringing in your ears, it's a haven for adventure and unique, visceral experiences.

An Encounter I’ll Never Forget

Swimming With A Whale Shark
Just when we thought there weren't any, we came across a juvenile in Saleh Bay. As a juvenile it was only half the size they can grow to but this was still enormous and was swimming right at us! I thought we were going to be swallowed but it just glided beneath us, brushing our stomachs. What an adrenaline rush—and what a graceful, incredible creature!

On My Horizon

Raja Ampat
I can't wait to come back to Indonesia and got to Raja Ampat. It's renowned for its marine life of course, but to witness birds-of-paradise in the wild at the break of dawn and follow in the footsteps of Wallace would be a dream come true.
