Most foreign travelers need a visa to visit India, unless they are Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders or fall under certain very limited exemptions. The most common way for travelers to obtain a visa is through India’s official e-Visa system.

Applicants must complete the online form a maximum 30 days before their arrival. The process involves uploading a passport photo and a scan of their passport’s photo page and paying the visa fee online (including a 2.5% banking fee), ensuring their passport is valid for at least six months beyond arrival with at least two blank pages. Once approved, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is emailed to the applicant to present to immigration officials.

On October 1, 2025, India introduced a new digital e-Arrival Card system, replacing the traditional paper disembarkation card, and all foreign nationals must complete the online form a maximum 72 hours before their arrival to India.

To submit the e-Arrival Card, travelers can use the official Indian Visa Online Portal. The form requires details such as passport and visa information, arrival date, flight number, purpose of visit, address in India, contact details, and emergency contact information. Upon submission, a digital confirmation with a QR code or reference number will be provided, which should be saved or printed to show officials at the airport.
