Tiwanaku Tours
The pre-Inca ruins of Tiwanaku are found near the southern shores of Lake Titicaca, and are one of the largest archaeological sites in South America, less well known than Peru’s Machu Picchu, but older and equally as impressive. At over 1000 years old, it’s well worth taking a full-day tour of these mythical ceremonial structures.
Ancient and mind-boggling, there’s little known about the architects of this magical site, but they filled the area with carved monoliths, temples such as Puma Punku, and grand archways, constructed in iconic red sandstone. Many opt for a Tiwanaku tour as a day trip from nearby La Paz, alongside other excursions to the Salar de Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama.
