27 Day Best of Peru Tour
| Aria Amazon
My wife and I have just returned from a 27 day tour of Peru that was designed for us by Jeremy Clubb of Rainforest Cruises. The itinerary, organization, quality of hotels, guides and drivers was exceptional. With the exception of an intra Peru flight that was cancelled due weather, everything went flawlessly as planned.
In my opinion, the test of an organization is not when things go as planned. It is, rather, the ability to recover when things go wrong. The issue of the cancelled flight was well handled and we only lost about a half day before we were back on schedule.
In addition to the overall planning of our tour, we were most impressed by the knowledge of the various aspects of travel in Peru and attention to details.
Three things stand out as examples of this:
1. We booked a 7-Day Amazon cruise on the Aqua Expeditions Aria through Rainforest Cruises. On Jeremy’s advice, we booked suite 208. This suite was the farthest from the engine room noise and was on the side of the ship that had a river view whenever the ship was moored.
2. The sequencing of high altitude destinations, Sacred Valley (9,500 ft), Machu Picchu (7,900 ft) and Cuzco (11,200 ft), were scheduled to start at the lower elevations and progress to the high altitudes in order to allow us to become somewhat acclimatized to the higher elevations.
These may seem like very small things but we noticed and appreciated Jeremy’s knowledge of travel in Peru as these little things made our trip all that more wonderful.
Our itinerary was:
Lima - Trujillo - Lima - Arequipa - Colca Canyon - Lake Titicaca - Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Cuzco - Iquitos (Amazon cruise) - Lima
An unexpected highlight was Trujillo. There are two exceptional pre Inca archeological sites in Trujillo. Temple of the Moon (Huaca de la Luna) dating to the Moche civilization (100 - 700 AD)
Chan Chan which was the centre of the Chimu civilization (700 - 1472 (defeat and absorption by the Incas). At its height, Chan Chan had an estimated population of between 40 to 60 thousand people. A truly impressive site, and, with the exception of Machu Picchu, more impressive than most Inca sites.
Without reservation, my wife and I can recommend Jeremy Clubb and Rainforest Cruises to design a Peruvian tour that will more than meet your hopes and expectations.
