Acqua Amazon

A charming and traditional wooden riverboat full of character for amiable Amazonian adventures.

Overview

The Acqua Amazon offers authentic and environmentally-friendly adventures on the Brazil’s Amazonas and Negro Rivers. The larger of two sister ships – the Lo Peix which is a great option for smaller groups of under 8 people – this charming and traditional wooden riverboat is one of the greenest boats on the Amazon, operating off-the-beaten-path cruises away from busy tourist locations in order to show travelers the real, wild and unexplored areas of the Brazilian Amazon.

Go With The Flow

With her hammock-strewn upper deck, inviting communal areas and nine cozy cabins of various sizes – including a quadruple bunk cabin popular with younger children – this rustic riverboat rightly proves a firm favorite of families and friends, and provides a relaxing homely base from which to explore the region and encounter its exotic wildlife.

The homely vibe continues with the welcoming warmth of the crew’s hospitality, shared bathroom facilities – with the exception of the Matrimonial Ensuite cabins – and the hearty Brazilian cuisine served at mealtimes, although some itineraries may even involve a barbeque on a beach beside the Amazon river itself!

Taking advantage of the equatorial climate, the vessel features solar panels which charge throughout the day to store energy for when the ship isn’t navigating each night. This not only proves great for the environment, but passengers will reap the benefit too, with quiet and peaceful, generator-free nights allowing guests to enjoy all the sounds that the jungle has to offer. In true green fashion, guests should also know there is no hot water on board, but in the balmy breeze of the rainforest this is rarely missed.

Flexible, Far-Reaching Exploration

The Acqua Amazon hosts a large range of different itineraries, from a condensed three day cruise to the lengthier seven day option that voyages deep into the Jau National Park in the heart of the Amazon, much farther than many other vessels are able to.

A pioneer in customizable itineraries, guests are welcome to select their own jungle excursions, based on their interests, making for flexible and fun cruises for everyone. There are plenty of canoeing and jungle hikes to join, and even the rare opportunity to explore the little known Madadá cave network and the abandoned rubber boom village of Velho Airão. Swim with pink dolphins, enjoy piranha fishing – eat your catch if you are feeling daring (don’t worry, this is a perfectly sustainable food in the Amazon)! – and witness the natural phenomenon of the ‘Meeting of the Waters’.

There are also some remarkable optional add-ons available for those unafraid of heights, including a climbing class of the towering rainforest trees and obtaining an envious bird’s-eye view of the Amazon’s labyrinthine waterways by floatplane.

El Capitan

The Acqua Amazon certainly has character, not least in the form of its charismatic Spanish captain, Jordi. Accompanying every excursion as your guide, his knowledge and some 30 years of experience in the area allow you to see things that you would certainly have otherwise missed. His passion and friendly nature make this a really personal trip that you will remember for years to come.

With capacity for just 20 passengers and great value pricing, the vessel is an enticingly afforable charter option. But whether traveling in a small group, a couple or as part of a family, with Jordi at the helm and the remarkable wildlife of the Brazilian Amazon around you, an Acqua Amazon cruise is sure to prove a great adventure for all.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Embarkation

AM: Embark at 10:00 AM, from Marina do Davi (near the Tropical Hotel), a car or speedboat will take you to Açutuba Beach or the Ariau River (depending on the water level). There, the boat will be waiting to begin the expedition. Depending on the water level, you can swim on the beach or in a small floating house. You will have the option to go dolphin watching, where you can observe pink river dolphins and even swim with this incredible species that lives freely in the Amazon River. Next, you will experience local culture and traditions by visiting a caboclo village to learn about the making of cassava flour, tapioca, beiju, and other traditional foods. During a visit to the medicinal plant garden, you will learn about their traditional uses. You will also have a great opportunity to buy local handicrafts made from colorful seeds and vegetable fibers, including comfortable hammocks that the locals use to sleep or travel by boat.

PM: Your next destination is the Anavilhanas Archipelago National Park. This 350,000-hectare area comprises more than 650 island groups. Travelers are captivated by the unique beauty of this place. Furthermore, the journey is very comfortable thanks to the absence of mosquitoes, which do not thrive in the acidic, dark waters of these rivers. Depending on the river level, you can stop at stunning white-sand beaches and enjoy relaxing swims. In the afternoon, you will explore part of this river archipelago. A motorized canoe trip through the canals, or flooded forest, offers the opportunity to observe the local flora and fauna; perhaps you will even witness one of the spectacular sunsets over the Rio Negro. At night, with your motorized canoe, you can observe wildlife, perhaps the large black caimans and, with luck, some nocturnal animals such as owls, snakes, and others. If the sky is clear, you may also admire the constellations of the southern hemisphere.

Local Culture & Anavilhanas Archipelago

AM: In the morning, you will depart by motorboat to observe the typical flora and fauna. Among the most common animals you may see are monkeys, sloths, parrots, herons, kingfishers, and hoatzins (gypsy birds). Along this river, you will also be able to contemplate the immensity of the Amazon rainforest and, depending on the time of year, the flooded forest and lakes. Depending on the water level, you can swim on the beach or in a small floating house. You will also have the option to go dolphin watching, where you can observe pink river dolphins and even swim with this incredible species. Next, you will experience local culture and traditions by visiting a caboclo village to learn about the making of cassava flour, tapioca, beiju, and other traditional foods. During a visit to the medicinal plant garden, you will learn about their traditional uses. You will also have a great opportunity to buy local handicrafts made from colorful seeds and vegetable fibers, including comfortable hammocks.

PM: Your next destination is the Anavilhanas Archipelago National Park. This 350,000-hectare area comprises more than 650 island groups. Travelers are captivated by the unique beauty of this place, and the journey is very comfortable thanks to the absence of mosquitoes in these acidic, dark waters. Depending on the river level, you can stop at stunning white-sand beaches and enjoy relaxing swims. In the afternoon, you will explore part of this river archipelago via a motorized canoe trip through the canals or flooded forest, offering the chance to observe local flora and fauna; perhaps you will even witness a spectacular sunset over the Rio Negro. At night, you can observe wildlife from your motorized canoe, looking for large black caimans and nocturnal animals like owls and snakes. If the sky is clear, you can admire the constellations of the southern hemisphere.

Anavilhanas Exploration

AM: You will navigate a network of blackwater rivers, lakes, and igapós (flooded forests), providing an immersive experience in one of the world's richest ecosystems. With luck, you may spot monkeys, sloths, toucans, parrots, herons, caimans, and even an anaconda in their natural habitat within the largest rainforest on the planet. You will stop in the flooded forest to fish for piranhas. On one of the beaches of the Rio Negro or on the small red-water rivers with small waterfalls, you can paddle in a kayak. The exact location will depend on the water level, which varies by more than 12 meters depending on the season.

PM: For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the evening offers an exciting night hike (optional activity). This is a fantastic opportunity to listen to the sounds of the jungle and observe nocturnal animals such as snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, and, with a bit of luck, even howler monkeys or jaguars.

Disembarkation & Iracema Waterfall

AM: At dawn, you will start sailing back to Manaus. Along the way, you will visit the Tatuyo or Tucano people to attend one of their ritual dances and talk with the shaman, offering a great opportunity to learn more about their customs, traditions, rituals, and medicines. Expected arrival in Manaus is around 12:00 PM. Upon disembarkation, a vehicle with an English-speaking guide will be waiting to take you north along the Trans-Amazonian Highway, 150 km from Manaus, to the land of waterfalls. On the way, you will stop for an included lunch at a restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious regional buffet.

PM: After lunch, you will visit Iracema Waterfall, one of the most beautiful and visited waterfalls in Presidente Figueiredo. Standing 10 meters high, it is situated in a paradisiacal setting within the Iracema Waterfalls Ecological Park. Access is by car via a 2 km dirt road through the forest, with wooden walkways in some sections allowing you to appreciate the Amazonian flora. You will hike trails that lead to the main waterfall in about 15 minutes. You can also appreciate rock formations such as the Palácio do Galo da Serra Cave, the Cathedral Cave, and the Onça Cave, where it is possible to take a refreshing bath. You can explore nearby waterfalls along the riverbank, such as Araras, passing through caves and viewpoints located about 35 minutes away. (It is recommended to wear closed shoes, light clothing, and swimwear). From here, you will head to your cozy lodge for check-in. Nestled next to a small river winding through the jungle, you will enjoy an unforgettable dinner featuring a special menu of regional meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables (menus can be selected in advance).

Maroaga Cave & Departure

AM: On Saturday morning, you will enjoy an included breakfast. If you wish, you can wake up earlier and explore the river that runs through the lodge property. From here, the vehicle will take you to your first visit of the day: a guided hike in the Maroaga Cave Environmental Protection Area (APA). This 80-hectare reserve is home to one of the region's main tourist attractions. You will venture into the jungle on a 1.5-hour guided tour to explore the Maroaga Refuge Cave, one of the largest in the country, measuring approximately 1,100 meters in length and up to 90 meters deep. A shallow stream runs through the entire cave, offering the opportunity to appreciate its impressive rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. In the cave, you might spot various species of bats and, with luck, the endemic Guianan cock-of-the-rock. This will be followed by an aquatic trail until you reach the Judeia cave, where you can take a swim. (Note: You will need long pants and closed shoes; you can also rent rubber boots on site, not included).

PM: Afterward, you will return to the car and head to the bird rapids (Corredeiras do Urubuí), where you can have lunch, take a swim, and, if you wish, go ziplining over the river and rapids. Lunch will feature regional fish or meat dishes typical of the area, which you can choose in advance. After lunch, you will begin your journey back to Manaus, arriving at approximately 5:00 PM.

Important Note: This combination of a boat and land excursion makes this expedition a complete experience, allowing you to discover the best destinations in the region—a vibrant and attractive trip for those seeking adventure and contact with nature.
