Acqua Amazon

A charming and traditional wooden riverboat full of character for amiable Amazonian adventures.

Overview

The Acqua Amazon offers authentic and environmentally-friendly adventures on the Brazil’s Amazonas and Negro Rivers. The larger of two sister ships – the Lo Peix which is a great option for smaller groups of under 8 people – this charming and traditional wooden riverboat is one of the greenest boats on the Amazon, operating off-the-beaten-path cruises away from busy tourist locations in order to show travelers the real, wild and unexplored areas of the Brazilian Amazon.

Go With The Flow

With her hammock-strewn upper deck, inviting communal areas and nine cozy cabins of various sizes – including a quadruple bunk cabin popular with younger children – this rustic riverboat rightly proves a firm favorite of families and friends, and provides a relaxing homely base from which to explore the region and encounter its exotic wildlife.

The homely vibe continues with the welcoming warmth of the crew’s hospitality, shared bathroom facilities – with the exception of the Matrimonial Ensuite cabins – and the hearty Brazilian cuisine served at mealtimes, although some itineraries may even involve a barbeque on a beach beside the Amazon river itself!

Taking advantage of the equatorial climate, the vessel features solar panels which charge throughout the day to store energy for when the ship isn’t navigating each night. This not only proves great for the environment, but passengers will reap the benefit too, with quiet and peaceful, generator-free nights allowing guests to enjoy all the sounds that the jungle has to offer. In true green fashion, guests should also know there is no hot water on board, but in the balmy breeze of the rainforest this is rarely missed.

Flexible, Far-Reaching Exploration

The Acqua Amazon hosts a large range of different itineraries, from a condensed three day cruise to the lengthier seven day option that voyages deep into the Jau National Park in the heart of the Amazon, much farther than many other vessels are able to.

A pioneer in customizable itineraries, guests are welcome to select their own jungle excursions, based on their interests, making for flexible and fun cruises for everyone. There are plenty of canoeing and jungle hikes to join, and even the rare opportunity to explore the little known Madadá cave network and the abandoned rubber boom village of Velho Airão. Swim with pink dolphins, enjoy piranha fishing – eat your catch if you are feeling daring (don’t worry, this is a perfectly sustainable food in the Amazon)! – and witness the natural phenomenon of the ‘Meeting of the Waters’.

There are also some remarkable optional add-ons available for those unafraid of heights, including a climbing class of the towering rainforest trees and obtaining an envious bird’s-eye view of the Amazon’s labyrinthine waterways by floatplane.

El Capitan

The Acqua Amazon certainly has character, not least in the form of its charismatic Spanish captain, Jordi. Accompanying every excursion as your guide, his knowledge and some 30 years of experience in the area allow you to see things that you would certainly have otherwise missed. His passion and friendly nature make this a really personal trip that you will remember for years to come.

With capacity for just 20 passengers and great value pricing, the vessel is an enticingly afforable charter option. But whether traveling in a small group, a couple or as part of a family, with Jordi at the helm and the remarkable wildlife of the Brazilian Amazon around you, an Acqua Amazon cruise is sure to prove a great adventure for all.

Embarkation

AM: Wednesday, at 10 am at Marina do Davi (near the Tropical Hotel), a car or speedboat will take you to Açutuba Beach, where the boat will be waiting to begin our excursion towards Acajatuba Lake.

Depending on the water level, it is possible to bathe on the beach or in a small houseboat and, if you wish, we can visit the pink dolphin and even swim with this amazing species that live free by the rivers of the Amazon. Then we will go to Ariaú River, where the film Anaconda was recorded, a natural habitat for wild animals such as birds and monkeys, and ancestral trees such as the giant Samaúma.

PM: Our next destination is the National Park of the Anavilhanas Archipelago. Area of 350,000 hectares with more than 650 groups of islands. Tourists are surprised by the unique beauty of this place. Moreover, the trip becomes very comfortable due to the absence of mosquitoes, which do not proliferate in the acid and dark waters of these rivers. At night, you can go out to focus on alligators and admire the sky constellations of the southern hemisphere.

After delivery of the cabins, we will embark on a speedboat that will take us to the first tour of the day.

We begin to sail to the East, where we can see the coastal area of Manaus, the Ponta Negra beach, the dome of the Amazonas Theater, favelas, the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market, and the colossal engineering work of the Floating Port to name a few. We continue sailing through the Rio Negro up to the ecological reserve Lake Janauari, place of the floating houses. Lunch will be on a floating restaurant, where you can enjoy the Amazonian cuisine at its best.

PM: After lunch, we will walk along a suspended walkway, from where it is possible to play with wild monkeys and observe various other species of animals and plants, including Victoria Amazonia, the famous Vitória-régia.

Along many miles, two rivers, Negro and Solimões, run side by side without blending. What a spectacle! But the day is not over yet, and we will still visit a floating house where there is a fish farming of giants Pirarucu, an Amazonian iconic fish. Back on board, we will sail on Rio Negro heading West, while watching the sunset. At dusk, we will be arriving inside Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve, the gateway to Anavilhanas Archipelago. At the beach of Palmeiral land reserve, we'll settle down for the night.

Let us explore the tributaries and lakes within this which is one of the largest biological preservation areas in the world. We will enter the Jaú River, observing the animals of the region. It is common to find otters, pacas, alligators, snakes, fishermen, seagulls, among others. Passing through the Pretinho stream, a tributary with dark waters, it is possible to reach a small black waterfall (depending on the water level). When arriving at the rapids of the Carabinani River, it is possible to see the peculiar formations of an environment that resists periods of flood, known by the local people as an enchanted forest.

PM: We can still take a walk in the forest and at night, a canoe ride to observe the animals.

Jaú River & Velho Airão

AM: We start the day sailing and observing the wildlife of Jaú National Park. With luck, it is possible to be surprised by otters, monkeys, and macaws. On this day we will visit the abandoned city of Velho Airão. An old city, built at the time of the rubber boom, but today, it houses only the ruins of that era. Here we can deepen our understanding of the rubber era since the village is one of the last remnants of the era. His only inhabitant tells us the history of that place, about the wealthy families who controlled the rubber trade, the exploitation, the slave labor, the search for wealth provided by the rubber tree latex, at that time called white gold.

PM: Following, we continue the navigation through the archipelago up to a place named Três Bocas (Three Mouths).

Três Bocas & Ariaú River

AM: We start the fourth day with a visit to Terra Preta, where there is an indigenous village. There we found handicrafts made by Indians themselves - baskets, necklaces, wooden plates, bows, and arrows. Let's see how cassava is grown and watch the process of producing flour, tapioca, gum, and other derivatives. We will visit the Maloca (traditional straw house) of the Indians, where the Pajé of the tribe will welcome us with the presentation of a ritual with the participation of the tribe. Our next destination will be the Ariaú River. On the way, during navigation, we can bathe on beaches of white sands, typical of the Negro River and Anavilhanas Islands.

PM: At dusk, we will reach the Ariaú River, well known for being the filming location of the movie 'Anaconda'. At night, a canoe ride gives us the experience of listening and observing the nocturnal animals of that ecosystem. The union between the Solimões and Negro Rivers makes the Ariaú River a mixed environment, with fauna and flora of both environments. It is common to find alligators in this river.
