Mahabaahu

A boutique riverboat offering immersive wildlife and cultural expeditions on the Brahmaputra River.

Overview

Sailing through one of Asia’s least-explored river systems, Mahabaahu offers a rare opportunity to discover the wild and culturally rich landscapes of Northeast India in boutique comfort. Combining expedition-style exploration with refined hospitality, this purpose-built river vessel opens access to wildlife reserves, tribal villages, and historic sites along the Brahmaputra—one of the world’s great rivers.

Welcome Aboard

Mahabaahu is a modern river cruiser designed specifically for the powerful currents of the Brahmaputra, blending functionality with boutique luxury. The vessel features five decks and accommodates up to around 46 guests in 23 spacious cabins, supported by a crew of approximately 30 for attentive, personalised service.

Public spaces include a restaurant, lounge and bar, sun deck with swimming pool, spa and wellness facilities, and open-air viewing areas ideal for wildlife spotting and village watching. The onboard ambience is relaxed yet refined, combining contemporary comfort with a sense of exploration as you journey through India’s remote frontier.

Life On Board

Accommodations span multiple cabin categories, including two Suites, Luxury Cabins, Deluxe Cabins with private balconies, and Superior Cabins with large picture windows. All cabins are air-conditioned and feature en-suite bathrooms, minibars, safes, televisions, and generous storage space.

On board, guests can unwind in the spa, enjoy Ayurvedic treatments, relax on the sun deck, or gather in the lounge for evening briefings and socialising. Dining showcases Indian and international cuisine, with regional Assamese influences adding a local touch. The atmosphere is convivial and expedition-oriented, with daily excursions led by expert guides and naturalists.

Itinerary Options & Highlight Excursions

Mahabaahu cruises primarily along the Brahmaputra River in Assam, typically between Guwahati and Jorhat. This remote region blends wildlife-rich landscapes with centuries-old cultural heritage, making it one of India’s most compelling exploration frontiers.

Highlight excursions include safaris in Kaziranga National Park, home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as elephants, tigers, and birdlife. Guests visit Majuli Island, the world’s largest river island and a hub of Assamese culture, explore the historic ruins of Sivasagar (former capital of the Ahom kingdom), and encounter tribal villages and river communities rarely visited by mainstream tourism.

Each day combines guided shore excursions, boat rides through side channels, and immersive cultural experiences that reveal the rhythms of life along the Brahmaputra.

Into India’s Wild Frontier

A journey aboard Mahabaahu is an expedition into a lesser-known side of India—where vast rivers, wildlife sanctuaries, and living traditions converge far from the crowds. You’ll glide past remote villages, track megafauna on safari, and explore centuries-old temples and monasteries, all while enjoying boutique comfort and attentive service.

Ideal for adventurous travellers, wildlife enthusiasts, and culturally curious explorers, Mahabaahu offers a rare chance to navigate one of Asia’s great rivers in style—returning with a deeper understanding of Assam’s landscapes, cultures, and natural wonders.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Kolkata

AM: After breakfast, proceed on a city tour of Kolkata, starting with the old British Calcutta. During the British colonial era from 1700 to 1912, Kolkata witnessed a spate of building in the city, largely influenced by the conscious intermingling of neo-Gothic, Baroque, neo-classical, and Oriental and Islamic schools of design. Unlike many minimalist north Indian cities, the architectural variety in Kolkata owes its origins to the European Style imported by the British. Continue to Victoria Memorial, a landmark of Kolkata dedicated to the UK’s Queen Victoria, which now serves as a royal museum of British Rule in India.

PM: Lunch in a local restaurant, then visit the Kumartuli – the Colony of Potters, where you would find almost 400 sculptors etching through clay brought from the nearby River Ganges to create some of the most fascinating idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. A whole army of sculptors, potters, frame decorators, and dressers work in harmony with heaps of straw, clay, cheap gold foils, bamboo, beads, and mundane things to create art pieces so vivid, stylised, and grand that they evoke a lifetime of awe. Return to the hotel for dinner at the hotel.

Sundarbans - Kotka Ghat, Kotka Forest Station

AM: An early morning wake-up for an exciting boat safari. This day we sail in our tenders along the shores of Sundarbans, in the canals and creeks near the Kotka Wildlife Sanctuary for an hour and a half to catch wildlife (spotted deer, monkeys, wild boar, water monitor, and birds) as it wakes up among the aerial roots of the mangrove mudflats. We return to MV Mahabaahu for breakfast as the ship sails through the estuary waters and reaches Jamtola Beach in the Bay of Bengal. We walk through the mangrove vegetation where the tiger plays hide and seek as it leaves behind ‘fresh pugmarks’. For those of us who are water enthusiasts can indulge in taking a dip in the waters of the Bay of Bengal (Carry swimwear on this day).

PM: We return to the ship for lunch, and the ship sails towards Chandpai Dolphin Sanctuary. After dinner, we enjoy a night safari in the Chandpai water inlets close to the mangrove shores. This is a very exciting and different experience in these water-laden animal sanctuaries. Breakfast, lunch and Dinner on board MV Mahabaahu.
