Skorpios III

All-inclusive A1 ice class ship sailing Chilean Patagonia's Southern Ice Field's fjords and glaciers.

Overview

Embark on a journey of unparalleled adventure and natural wonders aboard the Skorpios III on an expedition cruise through the mesmerizing landscapes of Chilean Patagonia. With over 40 years of expertise, Skorpios Cruises offers safe, unique, and exclusive exploration of the Southern Patagonian Icefield—the world’s third largest water reserve.

Built in 1995 and remodeled in 2012, Skorpios III is Southern Patagonia’s only A1 Ice Class rated expedition ship, perfectly tailored for navigating the challenging conditions of Patagonia. Its modest dimensions (70m length, 10m beam, 4.2m draft) make it the ideal floating base for venturing into the narrow channels and wild places it sails.

Life On Board

With 45 cabins for just 90 passengers spread across five decks, each featuring lower beds, plasma TVs, and spacious private bathrooms, the ship beckons intrepid travelers with an intimate setting where comfort is paramount and service levels sublime.

Guests can enjoy a comprehensive, all-inclusive experience on board, benefiting from full board—including fresh, local gastronomy and an open bar policy which includes premium Chilean wines—an exciting shore excursion program, and bilingual lectures from the expert expedition team.

Expedition Experience

Skorpios III sails a 4-night, 500 nautical mile (900 kilometer) Kaweskar Route commencing from Puerto Natales, just an hour away from the renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Thanks to her A1 Ice Class rating, your voyage will be 100% through the channels and fjords of Southern Patagonia, providing unparalleled access to immense glaciers and enabling you to witness their grandeur from astonishing proximity.

Along the way you’ll visit or see 15 glaciers of the Southern Ice Field up close, including the giant Guillard, Amalia and El Brujo, where disembarkations are organized, and immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity of the region, encountering elephant seals, sea lions, dolphins, cormorants, and condors at iconic locations like the Guardramiri, Calvo, and De las Montañas fjords.

For a more extensive exploration, Skorpios III also occasionally operates the 7-night ‘Nomads of Patagonia’ repositioning cruise. This comprehensive route combines the Chonos and Kaweskar routes, thereby including the more panoramic stretch of northern Chilean Patagonia which provides a wider variety of visits and experiences, including not only glaciers but also hot springs, diverse fauna, and insights into the local culture of Chiloe and Patagonia.

Environmental Stewardship

Skorpios Cruises takes pride in its commitment to environmental protection, and has set up a joint operation with the National Forest Corporation, CONAF, a collaboration which aims to minimize the impact of tourism on the pristine environment. Initiatives include constructing paths and small bridges in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park and organizing on board talks on conservation to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the region.

Embark on a journey that transcends the ordinary, and explore the untouched beauty of Chilean Patagonia aboard Skorpios III.

Amalia Glacier & El Brujo

AM: Early sailing to the Southern Ice Field glaciers is an unforgettable experience for those travelers who enjoy exploring and visiting unique far off places. To watch the elongated silhouette of the Amalia Glacier falling from the Andes Mountains and coming down to embrace Mount Reclus is an incredible sight, as are its blue ice towers that soar to a height of 90 meters and span a width of 3 kilometres. Its extraordinarily varied ice floes contrast with the surrounding rocks that show the faint presence of incipient mosses. Motor Vessel Skorpios III crosses this area slowly in order to give its passengers a panoramic view of this marvelous glacier and its surroundings.

PM: While sailing through the Patagonian channels and look at the marvelous natural beauties that surround us, we come to the El Brujo Glacier, an enormous ice block with a smooth rock surface on one side. The passengers will take to the boats in order to get a closer look at this glacier. They will debark on a rock known as "Garbo" rock, where they can walk along the glacier and look at the way in which the ice crawls down, smoothing these rocks for millennia. The summits of this natural amphitheatre are always covered with snow and their slopes abound in trees and vegetation.
