Arequipa & Colca Canyon

Upon arrival in Arequipa, you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel.

This morning, you will begin your tour with a visit to the districts of Carmen Alto and Yanahuara, where you will find a viewpoint with panoramic views over the city and of the imposing volcanoes Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.

Then you will make your way to the historic center, stopping at the Plaza de Armas, home to Arequipa’s finest stores stocking garments made from vicuña and alpaca wool, as well as some of the most representative buildings of the city, including the impressive cloisters of La Compañía de Jesús and the polychrome Chapel of San Ignacio that you will get to visit.

Finally, you will go to the colorful monastery of Santa Catalina, founded in 1580, where you will be able to appreciate its cloisters, picturesque streets, and squares.

Early departure to start the visit to the Valley. This trip takes approximately 5 hours with stops along the way included. On the route you can see the area of ​​Pampa Cañahuas, where you can photograph the South American camelids, llamas, alpacas and vicuñas in the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve.

You will go through a small snack restaurant to have an infusion of coca and appreciate the rock formations, then continue with the trip until you reach Chivay, the capital of the province of Caylloma, where you will have time for lunch in a typical restaurant.

In the afternoon you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the thermal waters of La Calera (optional) or stay at the hotel and have the afternoon free.

Early after breakfast, you will go to the Mirador de la Cruz del Cóndor, where if the weather permits you will observe the flight of the largest bird on the planet. We will have a short walk along the edge of the canyon for about 40 minutes to have better panoramic views and look for condors on our way.

After the visit to the Cruz del Condor, you will make some stops at another viewpoint to appreciate the terraces of crops, before continuing to the neighboring town of Maca to appreciate its church and local handicrafts, and having lunch in a typical restaurant at Chivay.

After lunch we make our return trip back to Arequipa, with a stop en route in Patapampa where you can appreciate the Chila and Ampato volcano ranges around you, as we pass through the highest point on the entire trip (4,910 meters above sea level).

Today might be the final day in Arequipa, but the fun is far from over. Our first port of call will be Las Canteras de Añashuayco where we will appreciate the enormous ignimbrite cliffs from which the blocks from which the most important colonial places of the city were built were extracted.

To this day there are still stonemasons who work on ashlars, and during our tour we will see a mega-carving of the church of La Compañía de Jesús, and one of the representative lion of the city.

Next we will move to the Culebrillas area where we will have a walk for about 20 minutes inside a narrow mini-canyon forged from water erosion, and discover some petroglyphs of the Wari culture from more than a thousand years ago.

After returning to your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport in Arequipa at the scheduled time.
