Lake Titicaca: Uros & Taquile Islands

We pick up passengers from the hotel lobby (if your chosen hotel is in the city) or El Sol Avenue (if your chosen hotel is lakeside) and transfer them to the port of Puno at the previously agreed time by mototaxi.

Our first visit will be to the floating islands of the Uros, about 30 minutes from Puno by motorboat. On these islands we find the ethnic group that arrived in Puno some 3700 years ago that have survived thanks to their ability to live upon the reed beds the islands are made of. Approximately two thousand inhabitants live on 100 such islands.

During the tour two islands are visited, the first is the most traditional, where the natives will show you how the islands were built, and provide a fascinating insight into their daily way of life. You can visit their houses, take photos dressed in their traditional costumes, and they will show you their handicrafts, characterized by embroidery and basketry based on reeds. They will even offer you a ride on a reed raft to reach the second island if you so wish.

Later we arrive at Taquile, a larger, permanent island recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its icogonography-laden textiles representing the islanders’ customs, calendars, and festivities.

We begin our island tour with a walk to visit ancient agricultural terraces and the vestiges of Inca ceremonial sites, all surrounded by the colorful costume-clad locals and stunning lake scenery with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains of the Illimani mountain range.

Lunch is shared with local community members accompanied by native dances and music, as guests get a greater insight into the rich culture present on Lake Titicaca. We return to the port of Puno to take you back to your hotel.
