Best Of Northern Argentina

Enjoy Argentina’s contrast visiting urban Buenos Aires, arid landscapes of Salta, and Iguazu Falls.

Overview

Explore the best of Buenos Aires, Salta, and Iguazu Falls on this 10-day family tour of Northern Argentina. In Buenos Aires, wander through picturesque neighborhoods, visit Salta and a ranch in Chicoana for a glimpse of Gaucho culture, experience a “Safari to the Clouds” during a two-day road trip by truck, and witness the magnificent splendor of Iguazu Falls. Thanks to Argentina’s strong Italian heritage, this is a country where family comes first, and when traveling in Argentina with your family, you’ll find plenty on offer for everyone to enjoy. All of the featured excursions, activities, and accommodations can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes.

Buenos Aires

Your journey through Northern Argentina begins in Buenos Aires with a city tour designed specifically for families. Take a bus or subway to the remarkable San Telmo neighborhood where you will visit the Comic Strip Walk, which features sculptures of some of the country’s most loved comic strip characters.

In La Boca, with its amazing street art, brightly painted houses and tango dancers performing in the streets, walk through Caminito, where you’ll find street vendors, live music, and stalls selling trinkets.

Salta & Chicoana

Fly to Salta, a very attractive city at the foot of the Andes. Explore the beautifully preserved historic architecture and rich colonial history. Stroll down the main street as the sun sets, enjoy a drink al fresco and then visit one of the many excellent folk bars, where you can relish dinner, wine, and traditional live music.

Head to a ranch in the nearby town of Chicoana for some horseback riding and a taste of local life. Ride through the town and the endless tobacco plantations, and observe the local people harvesting and cultivating tobacco. Continue into a landscape of twisting rivers and green mountains, offering fabulous views. Return to the ranch for a real gaucho BBQ.

Overland Truck Journey

Your next best of Argentina adventure is a two-day road trip across North-Western Argentina aboard a Movitrack overland truck. Cross the high-altitude plains of La Puna, en route to the vast Salinas Grandes salt plains, and descend into the Canyon Cuesta de Lipan where the change in scenery is dramatic, transforming from high altitude desert to fertile highlands.

See the incredible Mountain of Seven Colors that rises up behind the town of Purmamarca, where you’ll spend the night. The next day, continue through more epic landscapes to Tilcara. Visit the ancient ruins of Pucará and the Huacalera. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn, getting a dazzling view of the colored Pollera de la Coya Hill in the sunshine. At Uquía, drop by the charming local church, and visit Humahuaca, before heading back to Salta.

Iguazú Falls

Your tour continues with a flight to Iguazu, where you’ll spend the next two days marveling at the mighty Iguazú Falls. Brazil can lay claim to about 20 percent of the falls, and Argentina to the other 80 percent.

This means that you get a bigger picture view of the falls from the Brazilian side, looking towards Argentina, but in Argentina you get closer to the falls and there is a larger area to explore. If you’re having the Iguazu Falls Brazil vs Argentina debate, both sides are incredible, and on this trip, you will get to spend a full day on each side. Hear the falls resonating through the rainforest and revel in the spectacle before returning to Buenos Aires for your final night.

Itinerary & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Highlights of Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is most enjoyable when it is explored on foot and the transportation is best by bus. Today you will get an overflow of tradition and culture that your family can truly experience just by walking past the small shops and restaurants lined along the footpaths. During the tour, you will experience these sensations accompanied by local insights from your very own private guide.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel or the Recoleta Cemetery. You will then take a bus or subway to the remarkable San Telmo neighborhood where you will visit the Comic Strip Walk – sure to pique your children´s excitement! The Paseo de la Historieta is dedicated to Argentine graphic humor and features sculptures of some of the country´s most loved comic strip characters. The most popular attraction on this trail is the sculpture of Mafalda at the corner of Defense and Chile. You will also have the opportunity to taste Buenos Aire’s famous Italian artisanal ice cream as well as the “choripan”, a traditional dish of sausage from the grill wrapped in bread.

You will then take a bus from San Telmo to La Boca Neighborhood. La Boca is alive with music, brimming with laughter and pulsating with tango beats. The high-energy area retains a strong European flavor due to the influence of early settlers who originated from the Italian city of Genova. You will then walk through Caminito (“little walkway”), which is a street museum and a traditional alley in La Boca. This lane has multiple thriving street peddlers selling art, buskers playing music, and stalls offering trinkets of every variety.

You cannot travel through Argentina without knowing how to prepare a Mate and how to drink it. We developed this special local experience with an explanation about the Mate culture, what it represents to Argentineans, how to prepare it, and do’s and don’ts, and you will receive your package Mate produced sustainably. So, you will be ready to travel as a local!

Afterward, your family will take another bus to Recoleta and visit the Recoleta Cultural Center. Built in 1732, it was originally the convent of the Recoleta monks. It later served as a hospital, military barracks, refuge for the homeless, and an elderly people´s home, until it was finally transformed into a cultural center at the end of the 1970s. Recoleta Cultural Center contains mixed showrooms with outdoor corridors that make travel enjoyable and fluid, with samples of art that are renewed periodically. The center also communicates with Buenos Aires Design, a shopping center specializing in design, decor, and art shops, and internationally renowned restaurants, including the Hard Rock Cafe. The Recoleta Cultural Center always has something to offer for kids.
